Intercommunale d'Inhumation
Tasks
Based on a concern to avoid any discrimination several Brussels communes have formed an association to ensure that all citizens can be interred in a public cemetery if they so choose, in accordance with the customs or rules of faiths or philosophical movements recognised by the Belgian state.
This association is the Intercommunale d'inhumation.
Activities and services
The Intercommunale d'inhumation manages the multi-confessional cemetery that occupies three parcels of Schaerbeek cemetery leased from this commune. These parcels are reserved for the interment in the ground of human remains. They comply with the burial customs of members of the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Anglican, Muslim and Orthodox faiths, as well as the secular community.

The Intercommunale d'Inhumation performs its activities on behalf of ten communes of the Brussels-Capital Region:

- Ganshoren
- Ixelles
- Molenbeek-Saint-Jean
- Saint-Gilles
- Saint-Josse-ten-Noode
- Schaerbeek
- Uccle

Practical:Muslims are laid out on their side with their face turned towards the Kaaba in Mecca. Christians and Jews are laid out on their back with their feet in the direction of Jerusalem. |
