Introduction About the Region

The inhabitants of Brussels elected their first regional representatives on 18 June 1989. The Brussels-Capital Region became an autonomous Region, just like the Flemish and the Walloon Regions.

Through its institutions and its inhabitants, the Brussels-Capital Region asserts its unique personality: a territory in which speakers of French and Dutch live together, alongside nationals of many other countries.
